About
the Arkansas Gazette Project
The Arkansas Gazette Project was begun in January, 2000, to collect and preserve the history of the "oldest newspaper west of the Mississippi," which ended operations in 1991. The project director is Roy Reed, a former reporter for the Gazette and The New York Times, and emeritus professor of journalism at the University of Arkansas. He and others conducted interviews with former Gazette employees who experienced it as Arkansas's "newspaper of record." The project received generous financial support from Hugh B. Patterson, Jr., Ralph B. Patterson, and Carrick H. Patterson.
